A monthly P&L (income statement) template lays out revenue, cost of goods sold, operating expenses, and net profit for each month, following the standard structure: revenue minus cost of goods sold gives gross profit, gross profit minus operating expenses gives operating income, and operating income minus interest and taxes gives net income.

Unlike a cash flow statement, a P&L shows profitability rather than cash movement — it's the document that answers "did we make money this month?" rather than "did our bank balance go up?" Both matter, but they can tell different stories in the same month if the timing of payments and revenue recognition don't line up.

The template gives each month its own column, with revenue and cost lines feeding automatically into gross profit, gross margin percentage, operating income, and net income subtotals. A year-to-date column, and a budget-comparison column if you're tracking one, make it easy to see trends across the year rather than a single month in isolation.

Building this from scratch every month means re-pulling revenue and expense data and re-checking formulas each time. Finmap generates a live P&L from your connected accounts, with the same gross profit and net income structure, so you can check monthly profitability without rebuilding the statement by hand.
