What Is ROI (Return on Investment)?

ROI (Return on Investment)

ROI measures how much profit you generate from an investment relative to its cost. It's expressed as a percentage and answers the question: for every dollar invested, how much profit do I make?

ROI is used to evaluate capital investments (equipment, facilities, technology), marketing campaigns, acquisitions, and business initiatives. A higher ROI means the investment was more efficient and profitable. Investors and business owners use ROI to prioritize which projects to fund and to compare the effectiveness of different spending options. For example, an ROI of 25% means you earned $0.25 in profit for every dollar spent.

Formula

ROI (%) = (Gain from Investment − Cost of Investment) / Cost of Investment × 100

Or: ROI (%) = Net Profit from Investment / Cost of Investment × 100

Example

Suppose you invest $50,000 in warehouse automation equipment, and over two years the system generates $62,500 in total value (from faster order fulfillment and reduced labor costs). Your ROI is ($62,500 − $50,000) / $50,000 × 100 = 25%. After recovering your initial investment, you're left with a 25% net gain—a solid result if your cost of capital is lower than 25%.
